John Ulanga, 37, Executive Director, the Foundation for Civil Society - Tanzania

John Ulanga, 37, Executive Director, the Foundation for Civil Society, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.  The Foundation is a NGO whose mandate is to build capacity of civil society organizations in Tanzania.  John joined the Foundation in November 2005 as its third Executive Director and over his period he has led the Foundation to becoming one of the largest and most respected grants making organization in Tanzania and in the region. 

The Foundation offers more than 300 new grants every year and at any particular moment, the Foundation has a portfolio of over 400 on going projects throughout Tanzania supported by the Foundation grants.  Before joining this Foundation, John was the Coordinator of Commissioned Studies of Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF), one of the leading Tanzanian research institutions whose role is to build the capacity for policy analysis and development management in Tanzania, targeting government policy analysts, private sector and non-governmental organizations, John was accredited for establishing and enhancing, among other things, the Commissioned Studies Department which is the consultancy wing of ESRF.

He was also responsible for leading one of the biggest projects that ESRF was implementing in collaboration with a Canadian Company, Cowater International which was responsible for a Performance Management Project in 11 Key Government Ministries such as the Ministry of Finance, Agriculture, Health, Education, etc. Prior to that, John briefly worked for the Ministry of Finance of Tanzania, in the Accountant General’s Department whereby he was part of the team that introduced the now famous Integrated Financial Management System (IFMS) using a  software then called Platinum and now called Epicor.  John is professionally an accountant with a BCom in Accounting and a Certified Public Accountant in Tanzania

Kati Kerenge, 34, Head of Marketing & Corporate Communications, Tanga Cement Company - Tanzania

As Head of Marketing & Corporate Communications for a leading cement company in Tanzania, Kati oversees the strategic aspects of these business functions. Over the last 4 years, she has worked on ensuring that Tanga Cement and its Simba brand remain strong. Her key focus is ensuring that her Company continues to grow its market whilst also strengthening its brand in Tanzania and beyond.Prior to her current position, Kati was Corporate Communications Manager for the same company focusing primarily on reputation and brand management. Kati joined Tanga Cement from General Tyre when she was approached to help set up the Company’s Corporate Communications Department which she did within a year.

Kati is a member of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and is the current President of the IABC Tanzania Chapter that she helped set up last year. She has contributed to the growth of the association and was nominated for the association’s leadership programme in February this year. She’s also active in other professional forums such as the Marketing Centre of Tanzania and the Management Forum.Kati earned an M.B.A. from the Eastern & Southern Management Institute (ESAMI), a reputable regional institute offering a variety of management programmes, and a B. Comm. from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Nehemiah Kyando Mchechu - CEO & MD, Commercial Bank of Africa (T) Ltd - Tanzania

Nehemiah Kyando Mchechu - Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Commercial Bank of Africa Tanzania Limited   Nehemiah is an inspirational and transformational leader with high level of liveliness in business management. He was born and grew in Tanzanian where he emerged as the youngest CEO in East Africa region within 7 years of his career, particularly in the highly regulated financial sector. He is a B.Com (Finance) degree holder from the University of Dar es salaam.

He started his career (1999) as a junior banker at Citibank and thereafter briefly joined Barclays Bank Tanzania before joining Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania Limited as a Head of Trading – responsible for Bank’s balance sheet management, (assets and liabilities)(2001 – 2002). n 2002 – 2004 he took further responsibility as a Head of Global market, before his promotion to the alternate director position – Head of Global Markets and Co – Head of Wholesale Banking where he served from 2004 – 2006. In June 2006, he joined United Bank of Africa Tanzania which he managed to turn around from a loss to profit making bank in less than a year Despite the aforementioned inspirational changes, Nehemiah has been a catalyst in various Financial and Economic reform activities; this includes working in various involvements in different capacities, as President of ACI- Financial Market Association – Tanzania Chapter and Chairperson of the Tanzania Financial Market Leadership Forum. He spent time to introduce global financial products while at Standard Chartered Bank this involved both BOT and Tanzania Bankers Association. Nehemiah, worked as a team Manager of the first successful Subordinated debt issue from a commercial bank in Tanzania and the first one to be listed in the Dar Es Salaam Stock Exchange. This is the longest maturity corporate bond in East Africa to date He is currently the chairperson of the University Of Dar Es Salaam Faculty Of Commerce Alumnae (UDS-FCM Alumnae), A Board Chairman of the Rightways Schools, a board member of National Investment Company Limited (NICOL) and he is also a member of several country task forces

Heri Bomani, 37, Chief Executive Officer, Kenya Commercial Bank, Dar es Salaam - Tanzania

Schooled in Tanzania, Zambia, Kenya, and finally graduating with a BSC Economics degree from Cardiff Business school at the University of Wales in the UK, Heri has since returned to Tanzania where he has built a career in banking. Currently Heri heads up KCB a wholly owned subsidiary of Kenya Commercial Bank which is East Africa's biggest regional bank with assets in excess of USD2 billion. In Tanzania Heri has turned around the business which in the two years under his helm has been re-branded, turned profitable after years of loss making, has seen its balance sheet as defined by total assets increase over threefold, and is now arguably Bank of choice for regional and local corporates.

Prior to KCB, Heri spent 11 years at British multinational bank, Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania Limited. In the first half of his stint at Standard Chartered Heri consolidated his career in Corporate Banking before assuming the role of Head of retail Banking and being appointed to the Board of Directors of the Bank where he served for three years. As Retail Director Heri led the way in building a strong retail franchise that took the Tanzania market by storm with its innovative product range, modern distribution outlets, and superior service offering. Heri is also a music entreprenuer and founded Red Promotions Ltd. which is the region's first music and brand activation company offering services in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, and with a plan to rollout to over 10 countries in the next 2 years. Red Promotions has a strong reputation for hosting innovative, fun and high engaging events featuring high profile international artists, and provides unique opportunities for African musicians to work across the continent. Aidan Eyakuze, 39, Founder Director of Serengeti Advisers Limited of Dar es Salaam - Tanzania

Aidan Eyakuze, 39, Founder Director of Serengeti Advisers Limited of Dar es Salaam has a BSc (Honours) degree in Economics from Trent University (Ontario) and a Masters Degree in Economics from Simon Fraser University (British Columbia) in Canada. Aidan is currently Programme Director responsible for the East African Scenarios Project for the Society for International Development (SID).

The objective is to generate knowledge and to inform and sustain dialogue amongst key constituents on a set of possible alternative futures that the East African region might face in the coming decades. In addition to the East African scenarios project, Aidan has participated in national scenario-building projects in Kenya (2000), Tanzania (2003), South Africa (2004) and Nigeria (2007). Aidan is also a founding director of Serengeti Advisers Limited - a Tanzania-based regional advisory firm – and maintains a keen professional interest in economic policy and financial markets, international business, emerging trends in information and communications technologies and their impact on society.

Victoria Tunu Chale, 38, Human Resource Consultant/Trainer, Dar es Salaam - Tanzania (0754) 210131)

Victoria is a co-founder, Director and Managing Consultant with People Dynamics Limited (PD) a management consulting firm established in September 2008 and specializing in human resources, organisational development, industrial relations and training facilitation. 

Prior to establishing PD, Victoria worked as a consultant and trainer specializing in organisational development, industrial relations, strategic planning and learning and development.  Prior to becoming a consultant, Victoria was Director of Human Resources for CRDB Bank PLC, one of Tanzania’s largest and leading commercial banks and is credited with spearheading a successful HR strategy and change management programme that contributed to the bank’s impressive turnaround.  Victoria joined CRDB Bank in June 2000 from Citibank Tanzania Limited where she was Head of Human Resources with overall responsibility for development and implementation of the HR strategy.

Victoria currently serves on the Executive Board of the British Council Management Forum of Tanzania, a forum focusing on the development of a professional/managerial cadre in Tanzania, the Advisory Board of Music Mayday Tanzania, an international non-profit organisation involved in developing creative arts skills, the Board of AIESEC University of Dar es Salaam Local Chapter, the global youth platform that seeks to assist young people to discover and develop their potential in society and is also the Coordinator and Secretary for the Human Resources Society of Tanzania, a professional body focusing on HR development in Tanzania. Victoria earned an M.A. from Drew University, New Jersey (USA), a B.A. from Marymount College, Tarrytown (USA) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Law, Mediation and Arbitration, Institute of Social Work, Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). 

Victoria attained the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) Certification from the Human Resource Certification Institute of the Society of Human Resource, USA in June 2008.

Oskar Semweya-Musoke, 44, Principal, Taibah Schools - Uganda

Oskar Semweya-Musoke, 44, Principal, Taibah Schools, Uganda.  As Principal of a group of three private schools, Oskar is responsible for the provision of quality schooling for over 1000 students and leadership for about 200 staff.  The Taibah Schools are some of the leading private schools and renowned for introducing new trends in education.  Prior to joining Taibah Schools, Oskar was a Senior Teacher at Lampton School, an over-subscribed large comprehensive school in west London.  While at Lampton, in addition to his teaching load, Oskar had direct responsibility for 240 students and 12 staff. 

He is passionate about teaching and an excellent practitioner who understands and strives for change in education that will benefit Uganda, a developing country.  Oskar also taught at Makerere University in the Institute of Languages for two years.  Currently he is the moderator of the Capital Gang programme, a popular, weekly interactive radio talk show on a national radio station.  Oskar has an MA in Education from the Brunel University of west London and a BA from Makerere University

Dr Sebbaale A. Kato, 44years, Chief Executive Officer Case Medical Centre - Uganda

Dr Sebbaale A. Kato, 44years, Chief Executive Officer Case Medical Centre. I have built this institution over the last ten years into one of the leading private health care providers in Uganda. Started as small high street clinic, Case Medical Centre is now housed in its own premises, 100 bed hospital right in the capital city Kampala.

Dr Sebbaale is still in academic medicine, currently a senior lecturer department of surgery, Makerere Medical School. He has pioneered Laparascopic Surgery and Renal dialysis in Uganda. Dr Sebbaale is currently the chairman, Uganda Cricket Association, member of the Council of the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa. He is a Fellow to the International College of Surgeons and World Association of Laparascopic Surgeons. He is married with four beautiful children.

Robert Kabushenga is the Chief Executive Officer, New Vision Printing and Publishing Co. Ltd - Uganda.

He is in charge of leading the company’s strategic direction and making sure that implementation of strategic objectives is achieved effectively and efficiently.  The New Vision PPCL is currently an ambitious expansion program championed by Mr. Kabushenga. It involves a massive upgrade of printing capacity and significant investment in electronic media.

Before becoming CEO, Kabushenga worked as Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, a public affairs department in the Office of the President, Government of Uganda. In this role, he worked as a government spokesman and was responsible for government communications. Kabushenga had earlier worked as Board Secretary for the New Vision PPCL for three years until 2005. He is an advocate of the High Court of Uganda and a member of the Uganda Law Society.

He has attended the American Academy of International Law, Dallas Texas and worked on attachment with The Times of London newspaper. He was a political talk show host and columnist for nine years before retiring to concentrate on his new managerial responsibilities

Maria Odido, 49, now a former President of the Honey National Association in Kampala, Uganda

I stood down from that position a 5 years in the office, the company which I set up in 2002 became the flagship of honey industry in the country. From working with 315 producers when we started out, the number of producers supplying us rose to 2,700 in a space of 3 years.  Within 4 years, we had captured 75% of the market and were the 2nd largest selling honey in Kenya. We were producing on average of 60 tons of honey annually.  While this is very small – 12% in relation to our capacity, it is the highest ever produced by any individual in the history of honey in the country.

In addition to the honey business, I also engage in property development and have added a couple more properties to the portfolio left behind by my husband. I serve on a few committees-: NAADS (National Agricultural Advisory Services); PIRT (Presidential Investors Round Table); a member of UWEN (Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Network); President of UNADO (The Uganda National Apiculture Development Organisation); a member of the Board of Trustees of SOS Kinderdorf – an organisation taking care of orphans and abandoned children.

My formal school education ended after my senior high school. I did a diploma course in Medical Secretarial at the Kenya Polytechnic, where I graduated at the top of my year.  After completion, I went straight into business.

Paul Kavuma, 40, is a Director and Head of East Africa Private Equity at Actis - Uganda

Paul Kavuma, 40, is a Director and Head of East Africa Private Equity at Actis, a leading emerging markets private equity investor with USD4.6billion of funds under management, where he has managed several major investments across diverse sectors, including financial services, real estate, horticulture and infrastructure. Prior to joining Actis in 2003, Paul spent four years with HSBC Investment Bank in Johannesburg and London, where as an Associate Director he was responsible for originating and executing African corporate finance and advisory activities.

Previously a senior consultant focusing on emerging markets in PricewaterhouseCoopers’ International Privatisation Unit in Washington and as project officer for East African Development Bank in Uganda, Paul has advised on various high profile transactions. He also founded, operated and, after five years, exited a food and beverage, retail and family entertainment business in Miami, Florida. Paul earned a BA (Engineering and Economics) from Brown University and a MBA from Cornell University

Norah Owaraga, 40, Chief Executive Officer, Executive Support Services (ESS), Kampala - Uganda

Executive Support Services (ESS), in Kampala Uganda a limited liability company that is providing consulting support services to executives of civil society organisations, government departments, businesses and corporations.

She worked for the Change Agent Training (CAT) Programme first under Quaker Service Norway (QSN), a Norwegian non-governmental development organisation from 1992 to 1996 and then under Uganda Change Agent Association (UCAA) from 1967 until 2007. During her 15 years with the CAT Programme she rose from Administrative Assistant, through Administrative Director, Fundraising & Publicity Director, to Executive Director. She was awarded the UCAA 2007 Award of Merit for her commitment and dedication to UCAA, its members, and thousands of rural men and women of Uganda whose lives were positively impacted by her work. She is currently in the process of personally establishing a demonstration farm on eight acres of land in her native village of Komolo-Akadot in Pallisa District, Uganda. This will provide practical skills and knowledge to poor rural men and women on how to guarantee their food and nutritional security, to regenerate and conserve their physical environment, and to provide cash incomes in support of their families. This project is an attempt to answer the local crises in child malnourishment, low household incomes, deforestation, desertification, soil infertility, water table depletion, etc.  This is being done currently at her own expense and on her own time.

She holds a Master in Science in Development Management from the Open University, United Kingdom and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh in Scotland.

Martin Mbugua Kimani, Founding Fellow, PIE Project - Kenya

Martin is the founding fellow of PIE Project. PIE or Practice, Ideas and Expression is a Nairobi-based boutique consulting firm that conducts research on: The security dimension of East African integration; East Africa as part of the wider Indian Ocean’s security; the role of terror in East Africa and the Horn of Africa; and relating East Africa to the US Africa Command.

Prior to this, he was based in Addis Ababa as Senior Counter Terrorism Advisor to the IGAD sub-regional counter terrorism program (ICPAT). In this capacity he worked with the Horn of Africa states to strengthen the conceptual underpinning of counter terrorism and to promote stronger private-public partnership in security. Prior to joining ICPAT in 20006, Martin was the Head of the Africa Division at the London-based Exclusive Analysis Ltd, a leading provider of political risk analysis and forecasting to Lloyd’s of London. In addition to managing a research team, Martin worked on developing new business and products. Martin has been writing a doctorate in War Studies at King’s College London and served as a Teaching Fellow at the Joint Service Command and Staff College in Shrivenham, UK. Prior to moving to London, Martin worked in New York City as assistant vice president and emerging markets currency strategist at Foreign Exchange Concepts Inc, a hedge fund with over $12 billion under management.

Martin is a trustee of the Dialogue Initiative and serves on the editorial board of Kwani?, the Kenyan literary journal. He is a regular contributor to The East African, the region’s leading weekly and to different literary journals. Martin has provided political / security commentary to the BBC among other television and radio outlets. He has recently been awarded an African Leadership Initiative Fellowship organized as a part of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.

Julie Gichuru, 34, , Group Digital Business Manager/Talk Show Host, Royal Media Services, Nairobi, Kenya


Julie is responsible for spearheading RMS’s move towards establishing a global presence through the internet and raising revenue through digital platforms. Julie is also pursuing other commercial opportunities including syndication of shows produced by RMS. At RMS Julie will produce several new television shows some of which she will host.

Previously Julie was Current Affairs Editor, News Anchor and Talk Show Host at NTV, Nation Media Group where she was in charge of all editorial content of current affairs programs as well as current affairs elements of the news. Other roles included news anchoring and hosting one of Kenya’s leading talk shows, On the Spot. During her tenure at NTV Julie launched a number of Kenya’s best rated talk shows, including The Fourth Estate, Showdown, You the Jury, The People’s voice and the celebrated post election specials Voices of Reasons. The central theme of these shows was to hold leadership in Kenya accountable, encourage transparency and promote the concept of equity in the country.

Before joining NTV Julie was a reporter and News Anchor at KTN, The Standard Group, where she launched Kenya’s first investigative series The Inside Story. The ground-breaking show focused on corruption and crime and highlighted injustices and inequity in Kenya society with a view to creating real change. Julie is the first African woman to receive the Martin Luther King Salute to Greatness Award for Advocacy of Active Non-Violence and Peace. She has received awards for excellence from Daystar University and this year was a recipient of the Eve of Peace Award from University of Nairobi. She also serves on Advisory Board for the Tangaza College (Catholic University) Men’s Initiative on Gender Violence and HIV/AIDS. Julie is a role model to many young Kenyans, particularly young girls, and engages in several mentoring efforts with schools and universities. For the past two years Julie has been an active moderator and participant at the World Economic Forum on Africa and is a firm believer in the new dawn for the continent. Julie earned an MBA from Cardiff Business School, University of Wales, Cardiff and LLB Law from Cardiff Law School, University of Wales, Cardiff.

Rose Nyaboke Ogega MBS, 47, Finance Director, Skynet Worldwide Express  Ltd - Kenya

As a Finance Director  of Skynet , a courier company that she co- owns with three other colleagues, she has the challenge of ensuring sound financial management of the company  that is operating in a highly volatile economy. Prior to that, she was a Financial Controller  for DHL East Africa.  

She has been recently appointed to chair The women Enterprise fund Advisory board, an institution that has been tasked  by the Government of Kenya ,to empower women through wealth creation. She also currently serves as a Board member of Barclays bank of Kenya,  a subsidiary of Barclays Plc and  Old Mutual Life Assurance company, a subsidiary of Old Mutual Plc.  Rose is credited to have been the first lady Chairman of The institute of Certified public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) and she has been honoured by the president of Kenya for her contribution to the economic development of the country. Rose is  a Fellow of the Institute Of Certified Public Accountants of kenya ( FCPAK)and holds a B.com from the University of Nairobi.

Muchiri Wahome, 45, Managing Director, Deacons (Kenya)

Muchiri Wahome is the Managing Director of Deacons (K) Ltd, the leading fashion chain store in the region with 18 outlets, 200 employees and posting annual turnover in excess of $18 million, operating in Tanzania and Kenya. The company is celebrating its golden jubilee this year and expects to announce exciting plans for its customers and stakeholders later this year.

Muchiri is also a Non Executive Director of Scan Group since November, 2005.This is the largest marketing agency in East and Central Africa with a 55% market share. He is also the Chairman, Board of Governors, Moi Equator Girls, Nanyuki; this is a three stream, 600 girls boarding secondary school, funded by the government. On 12th December, 2005, Muchiri was awarded the Head of State Commendation medal for implementing performance management contracts in government.

He is a holder of a Diploma in Advanced Management, Strathmore Business School (Y2006) and a Bachelor of Arts, Economics, University of Nairobi (1987) Amongst a host of other activities, Muchiri enjoys a golf, reading and hosting TV talkshows.

Salim Amin, 37, CEO, Camerapix Ltd, Chairman, The Mohamed Amin Foundation, Chairman, A24 Media (+254 733-513924)

Salim Amin is CEO of Camerapix, founder and Chairman of The Mohamed Amin Foundation and Chairman of A24 Media.In 1963, world-renowned photographer, cameraman and publisher, Mohamed "Mo" Amin, launched Camerapix from a small shop in Dar es Salaam. From these humble beginnings grew a modern, independent media concern with a reputation for delivering world exclusive images and stories at the forefront of journalism in Africa.

Today, Camerapix employs over 30 media professionals, who operate out of its headquarters in Nairobi and an office in London. Camerapix offers its clients a wide array of media services including television production, publishing and photography. It is also home to 4 million images of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, and over 8000 hours of unique and historic video footage. The Camerapix Archive is the largest visual resource of its kind in Africa. Camerapix's sister company, Camerapix Publishers International, produces a series of award winning travel guides, coffee table books, and glossy in-flight magazines.

In 1998, The Mohamed Amin Foundation was launched to provide would-be African journalists with the tools and knowledge to tell local stories to an international audience. In 2004 Pete Murimi of Kenya was the first graduate of the “MoForce” to win the prestigious CNN African Journalist of the Year Award, a shining example of the quality of training provided at the Foundation.As Executive Producer and Presenter, Salim finished a documentary chronicling his father’s life in March 2006 entitled “MO & ME” which has to date won nine Awards for Best Documentary in the United States, Canada, India and on the African Continent, including the Grand Jury Award at the New York International Film Festival. The documentary achieved a successful theatrical release in Kenya and was screened at the prestigious British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), as well as the Cannes Film Festival in 2007. In December 2005, Salim began work on the launch of the first 24-hour pan-African News and Current Affairs Channel. Africa 24 Media, a precursor to the Channel and Africa’s first online Agency for video and stills content, launched in September 2008 (www.a24media.com).In January 2007 Salim was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Before this he was the Managing Director and Country Chairman for Shell and BP Kenya Limited and was appointed on 1st May 2005.  He was also the County Chairman for Shell Tanzania. In this period, amongst other things, he was actively and passionately involved in the development and implementation of the Companies HIV/AIDS interventions. He was and still is active in promoting the understanding of the complexity of the oil business in Kenya.

Prior to this he has held many positions in Shell and Shell advised companies including Distribution (Logistics) Manager for Shell East Africa, Chief Engineer of the Kenya Petroleum Refineries, Mechanical Engineering Manager at the world's second largest LNG facility in Bintulu, Sarawak and also held the post of Senior Engineer Safety Services for Shell International in The Hague.  He also worked for Shell in the UK on secondment. Patrick joined the industry at Kenya Petroleum Refineries in 1976.

He holds a BSc. in Mechanical Engineering from Nottingham University and is a Member of the Institute of Petroleum (UK) and the Institution of Engineers in Kenya and is a Registered Engineer. He is also the Chairman of the Petroleum Institute of East Africa, National Chairman of the Federation of Kenya Employers, a Director in several organisations including the Chemelil Sugar Company, the National Aids Control Council and the National Social Security Fund, a Vice Chairman of Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA),  Chairman of the Managing Committee of the world famous Starehe Boys Centre  and Immediate past Chairman of the Kenya Golf Union.

He is married with three daughters.

Nyiringango Patrick Kabagema, 34, Managing Director, Rock Global Consulting (RGC), Kigali, Rwanda

Nyiringango Patrick Kabagema, 34, (pkabagema@rgc.rw ) as Managing Director of a start-up Information Technology company, Patrick focuses on strategic and organizational development of the company.  Since its inception in July 2006, RGC was able to position itself as one of the leading provider of advanced IT infrastructure services in Rwanda. He developed a growth strategy which enabled RGC to grow its revenue and share of the market aggressively.

Prior to starting RGC, Patrick held a position of Technology Lead in the Global High Availability Operations of Air Products and Chemicals, where he led numerous projects and managed several processes. He was able to reduce cost, increase productivity, and improve quality of life through process engineering, task and process transfer, and automation. He worked on various projects and program including In-Sourcing of outsourced services, building of a level 9 unmanned data center. His future plan includes starting new ventures both in Rwanda and the USA as well as earning a masters degree in International Finance and Economics.Patrick’s voluntary work includes Mentoring Program, Supervisor of Free Tax Center for low income and elderly, sponsor of Friend of Rwanda (Non Profit Organization).

Patrick holds a dual degree in Computer Science and International Studies from Muhlemberg College in Pennsylvania, USA. He’s greatly influenced by the philosophy of the classical writer Adams Smith who wrote the following: “Let a man be never so selfish, that there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it except the pleasure of seeing it”

Monique Nsanzabaganwa, 37, Minister of Trade and Industry, Rwanda - +25008306730

Ms Monique Nsanzabaganwa was appointed Minister of Trade and Industry, Rwanda on March 7, 2008. Prior to that, she served as the Minister of State in charge of Economic Planning in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Rwanda for 4 years and 5 months. Ms Nsanzabaganwa is trained Economist.

She holds a Cum Laude Masters in Economics from The University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2002. She was awarded the Stellenbosch University’s Department of Economics Best Masters Student Prize, March 2002 Edition. She is currently doing a PhD Programme with the same university. Before joining the Cabinet, she worked with the National University of Rwanda as a Lecturer. Her areas of interest are Applied Microeconomics, Trade, Industrial Economics (with a particular interest in Small and Medium Enterprises SMEs), and Economic Policy. Since February 2006, as Co-Chair of the Task Force on Policymaking Systems and Process, she has championed reforms geared towards efficient implementation of the Nation’s shared vision and consensus building among the Private Sector, Civil Society and Government.

Ms Nsanzabaganwa is a Fellow of the Havard University John F. Kennedy School of Government’s Executive Education in Public Financial Management (July 9 – 28, 2006) She is married (To Théogène Bangwanubusa) and is mother to two sons and a daughter.

Henry Kanyesiime GAPERI, 46 years, Chief Executive Officer, The Social Security Fund of Rwanda (SSFR)- Rwanda

Henry Kanyesiime GAPERI, 46 years, Chief Executive Officer, The Social Security Fund of Rwanda (SSFR), Kigali.As a CEO, Henry oversees the activities of the most vibrant financial and xocial institution in Rwanda with immense impact on economic development. SSFR enjoys over 25% share OF Rwanda’s financial sector and is the leading real estate developer.

It also has equities in other various sectors of the economy. He is currently spearheading the reform and modernization of the social security system in Rwanda with the purpose of increasing the coverage and adequacy of benefits as well as ensuring savings mobilization that will significantly contribute to the socio-economic development in the country and in the region.

He chairs the Rwanda Capital Markets Advisory Council (CMAC) charged with regulating and developing in the capital markets in Rwanda. He has served in several boards including banks and NGOs. He is the founding member of the Association of VAT administrators in Africa. He also headed the reform and modernization project in RRA which oversaw the modernization of the Rwanda tax system ranging from policy, administration and legal framework. He has an MBA from Simon Fraser University and a BCom from the National University of Lesotho. He is married with three children.

John Mirenge, 43, Managing Director, Electrogaz - Rwanda

John has turned around the Rwandan Electricity and Water public utility from an inefficient, loss making public monopoly to a profitable, well managed entity within a 2 year period. This corporation is now striving to become customer centric and its efficiency and profitability has been achieved for the very first time since its inception 32 years ago.

Prior to joining Electogaz, John was the Chief Operating Officer of MTN Rwanda which is the biggest private Communications Company in Rwanda with more than 600,000 subscribers. While at MTN Rwanda, he was responsible for developing the company's growth strategy, driving key components of its business operations and launching new products. He drove the growth of subscriber numbers and the business profitability. Prior to his promotion to COO, he had been the Corporate and Legal secretary where he also managed International/Interconnect business. He joined MTN Rwanda in 2001 from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning where he was the senior legal advisor to the Minister. He currently Chairs Tristars Investments and Prime holdings Board of Directors and serves on a number of other Board of Directors in both public and private entities. John was also recently appointed to Chair the Board of MTN Rwanda and also appointed on the Board of Directors of ESKOM South Africa a largest power utility in Africa.

John holds an LL.B and a Post graduate Diploma in legal practice and has attended numerous couching in business management.

As Chief Commercial Officer, Mutoni leads the marketing and strategic planning programs for BCS Group- a Rwandan own entrepreneurial company recognized as a pioneer that revolutionize  and contribute for the modernization of the Information Technology, the rural communication and the transport sector of the country.  Before becoming the CCO for BCS group, she set up and lead the first outsourcing call centre in Rwanda known as Contact One Centre. 

Mutoni decided to return to her homeland, Rwanda in 2006, and prior to that she worked as a project manager for both companies Bowin Screw Product in Mississauga and ADP dealer services in Toronto, during her 5 years working experiences for these companies, she has acquired extensive experience in Information Technology sector and project management and helped these companies to substantially increase businesses.  Her working experiences in the USA with Ely Lilly & Company helped to design and implement a database for cancer trials. Mutoni is the founder for Rwandan Women & Young Adults Resource Networking Centre and a member of the Rwanda Children Association.  She has earned a Bachelor Degree in Information Technology from York University and a certificate in Project Management from Ryerson University.  She is Fluent in Swahili, Kinyarwanda, French and English
